Important information about Childbirth Classes

The childbirth classes offered at our office are $100 per couple. Many insurance policies will reimburse $70-$90 of that fee. If the patient has an FSA or HSA credit card through their insurance, they can choose to use that option to pay for the class.

In January (2025) Health First launched their FREE childbirth education to the community. Both classes at HWC and HF are taught by the same instructor- Lydia Baker. Many people have questions about the difference between our classes and the hospital. Why pay money when you can get the same thing for Free? BUT there are some big differences.

Our childbirth classes are 8 hours and comprehensive. Most classes are broken up over the weekend to allow for a better learning experience; 4 hours on Saturday and 4 hours on Sunday. They are always taught in the lobby of the Melbourne office and Lydia offers a tour of the Birth Suites after the last class (she also does a tour at the end of the C-section prep class). Our classes are very interactive and there are many opportunities for hands-on learning and practice. We also provide booklets for self-study.

The hospital classes are 4 hours with the last hour reserved for a tour of the birth suites. Within this limited timeframe, topics are not as thoroughly reviewed (as they are in our classes) and there is little room for participants’ questions and no time for group interactions or hands-on activities.

In our classes at HWC, participants will learn:

  • What to expect in pregnancy and warning signs.
  • Details about how the labor/birth process works.
  • How to cope with the challenges of labor
  • Breathing and comfort techniques with hands-on applications & practice.
  • Pain medication options and suggestions on when to use them
  • Induction methods
  • Family centered C-sections
  • Birth planning guidance
  • What to expect physically and emotionally during postpartum recovery
  • Up to date hospital policies
  • Partners will learn how to be a wonderful support person
